Attending the International Umpires Course for ITF TaeKwon-Do in Newcastle was an unforgettable experience that blended learning, personal growth, and a heartwarming reunion with friends from the TaeKwon-Do community.

Over two full days in March, I immersed myself in the world of umpires and regulations while enhancing my understanding of the competition rules. The course provided a fantastic opportunity for exploration and connection.

Joining me were friends and colleagues from various TaeKwon-Do Impact associated schools, creating a sense of togetherness that added to the trip. While I don't plan to adjudicate at world competitions, I recognized how important it is to fully understand the ITF World Championships and World Cup rules. Armed with this knowledge, I can better guide my students as they prepare for high-level events. For instance, knowing specific scoring criteria in all areas of competition could mean the difference between a win and a loss for my students.

The structure of the course was welcoming and relaxed, allowing for both learning and networking. We explored several aspects of the rules in detail. Yet I was wishing for more hands-on experience to benefit new umpires (me). Learning from seasoned umpires with world-level experience clarified many points for me.

A vital part of the weekend was reconnecting with old friends from across the country. One standout was Master David McNairn, my first instructor from Scotland. He is an 8th Degree black belt and a highly respected umpire. Our time together was filled with laughter and nostalgia as we reminisced about our early days in TaeKwon-Do during the late 90s and early 2000s in Dundee and Perth when I was a student of his at Montrose School of TaeKwon-Do. These moments were cherished reminders of how lasting bonds form through martial arts.

The International Umpires Course has helped broaden my skills and understanding.

Time spent learning nurtures both personal growth and the flourishing of our sport. The joy of reconnecting with friends, making new acquaintances, and engaging in learning for TKD reminds me: being a TaeKwon-Do instructor is not merely a job; it is a rewarding journey that shapes lives.
